Short-tailed albatross

The short-tailed albatross or Steller's albatross (Phoebastria albatrus) is a large rare seabird from the North Pacific. Although related to the other North Pacific albatrosses, it also exhibits behavioural and morphological links to the albatrosses of the Southern Ocean. It was described by the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas from skins collected by Georg Wilhelm Steller (after whom its other common name is derived). Once common, it was brought to the edge of extinction by the trade in feathers, but with protection efforts underway since the 1950s, the species is in the process of recovering with an increasing population trend. Its breeding range, however, remains small. It is divided into two distinct subpopulations, one of which breeds on Tori-shima in the Izu islands south of Japan, and the other primarily on the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Examples of use of short-tailed albatross
1. The short–tailed albatross, which breeds only in Japan, is listed as endangered.
2. There used to be between 2 million and 5 million short–tailed albatross, but commercial feather hunting at the turn of the century devastated the population.
3. If it hadn‘t been for young birds at sea, it could have been the end for the short–tailed albatross. –– On the Net: NOAA‘s National Marine Fisheries Service: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas: http://www.iccat.int/contracting.htm Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission: http://www.wcpfc.int/ Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources: http://www.ccamlr.org Privacy policy | Terms & conditions | Advertising guide | A–Z index | About this siteJoin our dating site today
